Options and Settings
Open File → Options… to configure typealot. Settings save immediately as you change them.
Autosave
Save files automatically — when on, typealot saves a file two seconds after you stop typing.
Sidebar
Show open tabs in the sidebar — adds a pinned Tabs section at the top of the file tree.
Menu bar (macOS)
Show in-window menu bar — on macOS, shows typealot's menus inside the window in addition to the native Mac menu bar.
New file
- Default type — the file type created by the + button and
Ctrl+N(Markdown by default). - Name new files — either Untitled (Untitled-1, Untitled-2, …) or Date & time (e.g. 2026-07-01 14-30-05).
Strict Markdown
Restrict to standard markdown — hides non-standard editor options (toggle headings, embedded video/audio, and so on) from the slash menu and toolbar. Existing content in your files is not changed. See Strict Markdown.
Theme
Choose a Theme for the editor's syntax colors and the app's sidebar and tabs, or click Import theme… to load a VS Code–format .json theme. Imported themes are stored in your config folder and survive restarts.
Appearance
- Font and Size (8–72 px) — used throughout the app.
- Tab size — 2, 4, or 8 spaces.
- Word goal — a target word count shown in the status bar; set to 0 to disable.
Security
Lock after — how long an unlocked encrypted file stays open before locking automatically (1–120 minutes; 5 by default).
File associations
Choose which file types typealot should appear for in Windows' Open with… menu, then click Apply.
Config File Location
Shows the path to your configuration file; click it to reveal the folder.
View menu toggles
A few display options live in the View menu rather than Options (each shows a ✓ when on):
- Word Wrap (
Alt+Z) - Spell Check
- Focus Mode
- Typewriter Mode
