Encrypting a File

typealot can encrypt any file with a password, right on your machine — nothing is uploaded. An encrypted file gets the .talenc extension and can only be opened with your password (or your recovery key).

How to encrypt

1. Choose File → Encrypt File…, or right-click the file in the sidebar and choose Encrypt….
2. In the Encrypt File dialog — "Encrypting your-file. This will replace it on disk with an encrypted .talenc file." — enter a Password and Confirm password. Use Show password if you want to check what you typed. (If the two don't match, you'll see Passwords don't match.)
3. Click Encrypt.

Your file is replaced on disk with an encrypted .talenc version (the original file type is remembered so it can be restored when you decrypt).

If a name already exists

If an encrypted file of the same name already exists, typealot switches to a Name conflict step and asks you to pick a new name, then Rename and encrypt.

Important: right after encrypting, typealot shows you a recovery key. Don't skip it — see the next page.
